Mar. 4th, 2013 10:29 amI spent the weekend trapped under a sick Brenner. Fever, cough, snot. There were moments when he would exhale and it felt like he must have a stoked fire in his belly, his breath was so so hot. Red rimmed eyes, mouth breathing. He was pitiful.
Not the whole weekend, I guess. I did get up early on Saturday morning and made my way to the Roanoke County Library to compete in the Toastmasters Area Competition for the International Speech contest. I won both my categories and beat out some seriously impressive and tenured (we’re talking 20+ year) Toastmasters. Humbled, honored and totally shocked! I will be representing my area at the Divisional competition in May. Who knows, I might even land on the International circuit. Dream big, right?
I have been pining away for a vacation. It’s too bad I don’t have time for one until May. Sigh. But I’ve generated a pretty impressive list of close-to-home potential weekend trips in all that time I spent under a sick baby:
1) Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg: Indoor waterpark and tons of interactive activities for kids
2) Chattanooga, TN: 6 hours away, great aquarium and hiking/caving activities
3) Gatlinburg – a cabin in the smokies and fun beach-like boardwalky things to do in the mountains!
4) Baltimore: National Aquarium, inner harbor
5) Washington DC to see the museums and National Zoo (Spring)
6) Asheville: Back to the NC Zoo – that was a great trip and the kids would be so much more engaged now!
7) Fairy Stone Park: Go back to our favorite cabin for a weekend of outdoor fun. Again, Spring?
8) Disney World (What, a girl can dream, right?)
And day trips:
1) Picnic and hike at Carvin’s Cove
2) Devils Marble Yard – let the kids climb around on the rocks
3) Greenway hikes/walks on any of the local greenways
4) Natural Bridge/Cave Mountain Lake (spring)
5) Greenridge indoor water area to play
Cabin fever has my soul in a vice grip, can you tell? I just want to do something fun and stimulating with the kids that doesn’t include things they see every single day. And we’re staring down the barrel of a pretty significant snow storm this week. Wednesday we could see somewhere from 3-10 inches of snow depending on the track of the weather. Yeesh. Maybe we’d better just plan on having some sort of over-the-top indoor adventure Wednesday. Like, make a killer blanket fort, pull all the couch cushions off the couch for a jump-fest and then play in the snow until group nap time? Pull out the red Christmas lights to make a fake campfire and toast s’mores in the oven? Finger-painting? What are your favorite area trips? Trips not in your area? Give me ideas! What would you do if you were snowed in for a few days?
