Feb. 22nd, 2013 06:09 amI looked at my LJ calendar this week and I cannot believe that I am averaging two updates a week. My journal time used to be sacred. I need to get back to this little stress reliever.
I had a terrible day at work yesterday and took a break, wrote and update and went to post it when LJ's new update page demonstrated complete incompatibility with the workplace's antiquated technology. We really need to upgrade our version of Internet Explorer. And we're all locked down from downloading, so I can't fix it. Luckily, I felt much better by the time I left work and hung out with the kids for a while.
Sleet is hitting the windows and the world looks icy in the pre-dawn dark. I will definitely be taking my time going in this morning! Less than four weeks until the official start of Spring.
Our community is opening a Diversity Center tonight. A two-year long labor of love for some committed members of the GLBT community here. I convinced Nicole that (even though the opening is at baby bedtime) we should go. I also asked Nicole if I could volunteer there. I have always wanted to volunteer with gay teens and youth (especially those who have lost much by coming out - I will never forget that feeling even though my relationships have mostly all been repaired) and show them that life IS good. I feel like the life Nicole and I have together is such an example of, "Yes, you can and will live a normal, happy, fulfilling life with the partner of your choosing. You can have kids, a career, and hope." I want to make a difference and be involved.
We also talked about taking the boys down to the shelter that we foster for and walking dogs on Saturdays once Spring comes. Modeling the service and involvement values this family holds so dear.
I was thinking on my way to work the other day about my impact. I know that statistically only something like 1% of the population raise to a level of fame and influence to make these world-wide impacts with their causes and life. I never thought I would be this huge and famous philanthropist - especially since I have a day job and we don't have a ton of money to give - but I do want to be able to look back and say that over my lifetime I was an advocate, ally, and lived my life in such a way that all those people I touch walk away better from the encounter, however small.
