Sep. 6th, 2012 07:59 amI mark my days with signs. Sigils of new seasonal beginnings.
The…
First crocus
Day the sun feels warm again after winter
Day I can wear a t-shirt with no sweater
First irises and daffodils and snowdrops
First day I get up and go to work in the light
First surge of honeysuckle
First ripe watermelon
First wisteria and jasmine vine blooms
First lightning bug sighting
Day the Queen Anne’s lace blooms high
Last lightning bugs
Late summer rain
Last surge of honeysuckle
First morning I wake up and go to work entirely in the dark
First time I get caught in flurry of leaves falling on a golden day
First time I smell wood smoke in the air
First snow flurries
Today was the day I spotted the last surge of honeysuckle. Soon it will be dark dark when I leave the house and it will be time to get the sweaters from the attic and start bracing for winter.
This weekend we will be prepping for the beach vacation. One last hurrah of summer before I let go of the season.
Last night the skies opened up and I stepped out onto the porch alone to hear the steady downpour and watch. The air was so thick and soupy I felt like I was back in East Texas on my grandmother’s pebbled patio smelling her first cigarette of the day and coffee and newsprint. I swear that for just one second she was with me.
Today is employee appreciation day at work. This place is teeming with balloons and joy. I was greeted by some of my favorite people at the door and had hugs and laughs from the first moment of my work day. I saved the day for one of my favorite mentors before 7:30 AM AND my second cup of coffee. That’s a good start, right? It’s going to be a fun day all around.
Last night I made a broccoli and mixed veggies chicken rice bake. I thought it was *tasty*, but the boys refused it. Nicole tried to coax them, but no dice. I made a skillet lasagna earlier this week and when Nicole pulled *that* out of the refrigerator, I heard Brenner shout, “YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!” Okay kid, tell us how you really feel. Ha!
