dreamsrundeep: (summer feet)
I meant to mention yesterday that the neighborhood lost a sentinel on Monday. The neighbor’s 2.5 story tree in her back yard was badly damaged in the last round of windstorms that nearly classified as a derecho. The roots were dislodged from the firmament and it was leaning precariously over our yard. Her insurance company agreed to pay to have it taken down as a hazard.

Tuesday evening I went upstairs and the light pouring through the back of our house seemed unnatural and vibrant. I couldn’t ever remember a time of year when the light was that prevalent. I made some remark about it to Nicole and she remembered that she’d forgotten to tell me that a whole crew of tree-takers arrived with truck after truck and many, many chainsaws. The tree was gone in the time I was at work.

Now I look out the back windows and can see straight through to the houses behind us that I’ve never been able to see before. Last night I thought I could almost see the train tracks. It is an odd feeling not to have that shady protection of that full elm tree. (I think it was an elm. I feel like she told me that once.)

Yesterday’s run was not very successful, but I did hit my three mile mark. I cut through the park on my way home for the first time since the windstorms, too. The last time I went through there I ran through dead fish and had a huge tree-limb blocking my way. Turns out that the tree limb was from my favorite gnarled oak near the park. That tree has to be at least 100 years old and shaped a little like a small version of the Angel Oak. It is … well, was … a glorious tree. You can see the city is trying to save it, they sawed off the largest and most damaged branches. But now they stick out like severed limbs and make me feel sad and eerie at the same time.

The gorgeous birch last summer, the sentinel elm and the gnarled oak this summer. I need to stop getting so attached to trees.

My brother comes today! Hurray! We have tickets for a 9:30 AM tour of Monticello tomorrow. Hellllllo early morning on my day off! I think I win the Sister of the Year award for taking him, though. Seriously.
