Aug. 13th, 2012 07:21 amThere is something different in the air this pink-tinged morning. I can’t explain it. Like the polarity has been reversed, waves in another direction. The tide is coming in. I don’t know what it means, exactly, but I’m thinking that life is going to show me something great today.
It feels like this has been the coolest August ever. (63 degrees!) This morning as I sat out on the front steps in the pre-dawn with Raleigh, the wrap of an unmistakable chill and early darkness were like holding hands with Fall. Our front walkway is a rainbow of color from all the chalk drawing the kids did last night at dinner.
I know that August isn’t done with us yet. I’m sure some dog days remain, but September (and our beach vacation!) is creeping ever closer. Today was the first day of school in several municipalities and counties south of us. Lots of back-to-school reminders on TV (including how to stop for school busses!). I can’t shake that eternal feeling that the end of summer brings with is fabulous new beginnings in learning. Back to school time has always been such a joy for me.
Random:
Occupy Roanoke:
This weekend as we passed the downtown park, the Occupy Roanoke movement had three to five folks sitting on the busy street. I remember when the park was overflowing with Occupiers and their command station. Now it is typical to see less than 10 of them hanging out only on the weekends. One guy always has a red flag flying which always makes me shake my head and wish he wouldn’t fly it. Casting the little group here as Socialist in the Bible Belt – no wonder the movement never went that far here.
It did get me wondering if there were Occupiers still occupying elsewhere, though. And lo and behold, a story on the BBC this morning about the largest Occupy camp in Asia being disbanded by court order in two weeks. I’m sad the movement was so poorly organized that (other than awareness, arguably) there was no real change or impact.
Books:
Science Friday on NPR is a *favorite* of mine. They’ve talked about two books in the last two weeks that had me run out and buy them. Visit Sunny Chernobyl (about one man’s journey through the most polluted placed on earth – one being Port Arthur, Texas where my mom grew up) and Monkey Mind – a memoir about a guy dealing with his anxiety.
That brings me up to WAY too many books. I’m in the middle of book 3 of the Game of Thrones with one more to go, I have the Hunger Games (book 1) on my kindle and these two new books. I cannot WAIT until the beach. The kids are older and require so much less undivided attention. I have high hopes.
Raleigh:
In my opinion, she’s doing really, really well. I am loving having an early morning buddy again. I also love that she goes to bed with me – except once this weekend when she wasn’t sleepy and stayed up with Nicole. She sleeps at my feet, Tucker sleeps at Nicole’s feet. I am going to buy her a collar to replace the walmart red rhinestone one that she came with. And I am going to pick it out, darn it. Nicole wants her in a matching collar with the boys, but I want her in something girly. I can’t help it. So there.
