Aug. 6th, 2012 07:58 amI made pork chops in the crockpot yesterday for dinner today. They smelled so yummy and I was so looking forward to them! I went up to bed while they were still cooling enough in the kitchen to be popped in the refrigerator. I made Nicole promise that she would remember to put them away before bed… because the last time I made the pork chops, she left them out overnight and we had to throw it allllll away. This morning, I come downstairs and the pork chops are on the counter. So much for dinner tonight. My other dinner plan was for a less crazy night when I had time to cook. With a late meeting tonight, I think we’re going to be eating pizza or grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner tonight instead of a hearty, veggie-packed pork chop meal. The very thought of it make me sad-sick this morning. I hate wasting food. Especially NINE pork chops. Woe is me. And Nicole feels pretty crappy about it, too. Woe is us, I guess.
The weekend was hectic but not all together bad. College friends came up with their 5 year old and nine month old. It was strange to be in this middle place (toddlerhood) and remember just how helpless and 9 month old baby still really is in comparison to our 18 month olds. And the 5-year old was precocious, intelligent and boundary testing. “I didn’t THROW the ball at the dog, mama. I dropped it and it hit him accidentally.” Yeah, kid. We all saw you peg the dog. Oy. I wonder if our 5 year olds will be like that? (Of course they will – in their own ways.) You could tell that Mama and Dad were not amused by some of the antics while Nicole and I just took it all in. We all had a fabulous time together because we all have kids and understand the whole rigmarole that goes with it.
It rained and rained yesterday (off and on) – heavy deluge-type rains that came quickly and flooded gutters. Brenner kept running to the window shouting, “What’s THAT!?” and finally was able to clearly say “Rain” once after we’d repeatedly answered his adorable and insistent question. Brooks sat in my lap after dinner was over and snacked on blueberries, eating them right out of the container and bopping/dancing at the table from the sheer joy of being surrounded by grown ups and enjoying the berries. Brenner tore around the house with his mylar balloon (a treat from shopping with mommy) and shouting “What’s THAT!” and squealing.
The kids are starting to play chase with each other. Have I mentioned that? If not, I should have. It’s hilarious. They pop out from around corners and scare each other, giggle and take off running in opposite directions. Twins are fun!
I already miss this weekend. I had a hard time prying myself away from the soft, warm comfort of the bed and the body pressed against me this morning. The heady and humid air, condensation on all of the windows making the world look like an impressionist painting. I would love a day off. But our beach vacation is a month away. We WILL make it.
