My facebook feed was a mess this morning with all of the news about North Carolina voting to define marriage as between a man and a woman in their state constitution.

While I feel the loss of civil rights being snatched, there was once a time when I would have been really emotionally impacted by a vote like that. As much as my heart hates it, nothing for me changes. My marriage is still not recognized, our children still only have me on their official birth certificate, Nicole still cannot technically make any major life decisions about them (if someone actually did some digging far enough to determine she isn't their biological mother - yay for having the same last name!), and legal marriage is as far away from us in Virginia (politically speaking) as it is in North Carolina.

We live to fight another day, I guess. I hope that someday this will all trickle up to the Supreme Court and that there are enough fair judges to federally protect my family. Someday.

Until then, we made Mother's Day cards for the grandmoms last night. The children were less than biddable with the finger paints and the mommas were not as prepared for the non-biddable-ness as we could have been. Nicole brought home dinner for the two of us and we enjoyed a night on the couch together after putting the babies to bed.

My life is a good life. We are good people, we pay good taxes out of our hard-earned money, we have adorable kids, we are productive members of society. I wonder if North Carolina/Virginia can even imagine this stable, happy family?
