I love these surveys.  This one is ever-so-slightly different than the ones I've done in the past years by a question here or there:

1. What did you do in 2014 that you'd never done before?
Got legally married (May 3rd)
Had my home state recognize my marriage (October 6th) on the 7th anniversary of our Commitment Ceremony
Lost 30+ pounds and hit my goal weight of 130 and size 4/6
Became a Runner
Ran 9.5 miles and made running a habit/passion
Went to Chicago
Took the kids to Disneyworld
Went to San Francisco with my wife, attended Out and Equal Summit
Got promoted twice in the same calendar year
Made straight A’s in Graduate School
Completed a high-profile e-learning course from soup to nuts
My Mother in Law moved to town and started watching the kids full time
Got a new purple office!

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I didn’t make any resolutions last year.  I think that I  may not this year, either.  I’m enjoying the pace of life.  I am going to complete a half marathon this year at some point.  Hopefully March 1st!

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My sweet niece did! And her baby is the most adorable girl EVER.  Like, EVER.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My Aunt Margie and her husband, my Uncle Timber.  Timber passed away first from lymphoma they found in the spring this year.  Margie died on All Saints Day this fall of a broken heart.

5. What countries did you visit?
None this year!

6. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?
Well, money would be nice.  But we didn’t really LACK it in 2014. We should spend and save better.  I don’t really lack anything except time.  And I’ll get that back once I finish my Capstone!

7. What date from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
May 3rd: Legal Marriage day! October 6th: The day we became legal in Virginia.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Grad School, adding distance to running, losing 30 pounds

9. What was your biggest failure?
Probably letting myself lose my patience and raising my voice to the kids when I really wanted to hold on to my cool better in situations.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not really!  Discovering you have allergies and being proactive about them is a great way to avoid sinus infections.  Took me years to figure that out.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Everything related to my new purple office.

12. How did you earn your keep?
Instructional Designer at a Fortune 500 company

13. Where did most of your money go?
Kids. Travel.

14. What was your best month?
May.  October.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Trip to Disneyworld, trip to San Francisco! Also won a trip to Phoenix through work in March 2015.

16. What song will always remind you of 2014?
Counting Stars (Older, but YES FOR RUNNING) and Bleeding Out by Imagine Dragons (Again, RUNNING)

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier.
ii. thinner or fatter? A LOT thinner
iii. richer or poorer? Richer, overall.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
I can’t think of ANYTHING.  Maybe been crafty? Meditate more.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Lost my patience with toddlers.

20. What steps will you take to actively change what you're unhappy with?
Make some time for meditation, maybe?  I don’t know.  I’m not that unhappy.

22. What's something you learned about yourself?
While I might not be changing the world on a global scale, my reach is far and it is strong.  I’d let people dull the sparkle for too long.  Now I’m in a right fit, right place, right time situation again and my star is shooting faster than ever.  I am capable of making it through the worst and still being triumphant.  I’m also a lot more determined, capable, and stubborn (in a good way) than I ever imagined.

23. What's the one thing you thought you would never do but did in 2014?
Travel to Chicago and speak in front of 500 people in Corporate Office.  Attend the Out and Equal Workplace Summit through my efforts to educate and empower the workforce through diversity awareness.

24. What was your favorite TV program (not Doctor Who!)?
TV?  What’s that?  Do kids shows count?  I love Jake and the Neverland Pirates and Sophia the First.  Kidding.  Kind of.  Once Upon a Time is still my favorite and I weekly carve out time to watch it.  I don’t want much TV.

25. Did you know anybody who got married?
My nephews (two of them!), my cousin Paul.

26. What states did you visit in 2014?
Illinois, Florida, Texas, California

27. Where were you when 2014 began?
In bed with my wife. Maybe that’s why this year has been a year of heat and success.  I think we’re going to need to recreate that this year…

28. Who were you with?
Just my wife, silly.

29. Where will you be when 2014 ends?
Aaaaand again, with my wife.  Hopefully in bed.

30. Who will you be with when 2014 ends?
Just her, again.  What’s with this voyeuristic survey?

31. What was the best book you read?
The History of Rain –Niall Williams.  What a beautiful book.  But I also read a LOT this year, so there are many I could list.

32. What was your greatest musical discovery?

46. Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year?
Not really.

47. What was your most embarrassing moment of 2014?
I’m forever sticking my foot in my mouth while attempting to bridge to people I haven’t seen in a while. ;)  That’s always fun!  “Hey! I haven’t seen you in a while! How’s  your husband?” “We divorced six months ago.” … Typical.

48. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2014:
Sometimes going with the flow in a determined fashion can get you where you want to be much more calmly than setting BIG AGGRESSIVE goals.

49. What are your plans for 2015?
Run 2 5Ks, 1 10K, and complete a half marathon.  Finish Grad School. Be more awesome.

50. Quote something that sums up your year: My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style. – Maya Angelou
